Well you certainly have a good point, the GL1 served a lot of transmissions
for many years. However, the durability expectations of long ago were
nothing compared to what people expect now. If you have major engine and
trans problems with your new car before 100K miles you would think it is a
bad engine. However, not too many years ago I remember people tearing
down engines at 60-80k miles and thinking nothing of it. It was simply worn
out! Things like that have changed a lot. My Dodge Caravan daily driver
has 140K miles on it and I'm planning on running it to 200K.
I know that the MT-1 spec specifically addresses yellow metal compatibility
issues, however a lot of the GL5 gear oil without the MT-1 spec also
addressed this same issue, but the manufacturer typically put the info into
their literature.
