I tore my front axle down today to repair whatever caused the leak that
contaminated the front break shoes with oil. My front axle is the older
style that has the constant velocity joint in both axle shafts instead of
the x type universal joints. (about 5 years ago I replaced the bearings and
hub seals). At that time I thought the inner axle shaft seals looked ok.
I don't think the inner axle shaft seals were leaking. I think the
grease I used (Kendall, Super Blue, High Temp EP, L-427 Grease, It is a
creamy grease with a dark blue color.) was starting to separate with age,
and the liquid part spun out of the hub onto the break shoes. The reason I
think this, is that the case of grease I used (5 years ago) was still on the
shelf, and the grease in all the tubes was also starting to seperate and
this blue oil (the grease is a dark blue color) was running out the ends of
all the tubes.
Well this time I removed the inner axle shaft seals. (following the advise
of people on the list) I used a peice of 3/4 inch pipe with a pipe coupling
on one end, and pounded the retainer out from the other side of the axle & I
am installing a new set of seals.
Well, here is my question; What type of grease should I use? I want to
be sure to use something that does not seperate this time.
I remember when I cleaned the hubs out the first time, the original
grease was thicker and "stringier". What type of grease was this?
Thanks,
Bill
