The only real reason to convert to metric is for science and engineering.
The metric system makes the world of physics, be it statics, dynamics,
thermo, chemistry, etc.. much easier to do. You can go from on branch of
science to another and still use the same units and numbers. The SAE system
has many units that can't be used by another branch with out converting
because each branch of science kinda has its favorite units.
Now, just about every american engineer I know does calculations in the
metric system and then converts the solution over to SAE. Why because they
have a better grasp of what SAE units look and feel like. Also if you look
alot of the metric bearings sold in the USA are actually only SAE bearings
with the metric equivilant size printed on the bearing.
