Who told you that? 2xxx series is much stronger than 6xxx series, and
double the cost (roughly speaking).

Buy a couple 12' lengths of 5/16" and take them to a centerless grinder,
should be around $50, material will be much less than that.
But if your going to go to that trouble I think it would be wise to send an
old pin to a metalurgical lab and have it analysed, that could cost $50 to $100.
