I think that you need to check the initial timing so you need to know when the number one piston is
at/near top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke. TDC for #1 can happen twice, once on the
exhaust stroke, then again on the compression stroke. To find out when #1 is at TDC on the
compression stroke, remove the sparkplug closest to the fan (#1) then use a wrench to turn the
engine by hand. Put your finger over the sparkplug hole while turning the engine and when you feel
the pressure leak by your finger you know that the piston is coming up on the compression stroke.
Line up the timing marks on the pulley with the pointer then look to see if the rotor in the
distributor is pointing to the #1 wire.
