Dave, when the engine's running (i.e. alt. is
charging), you should see 14.2v to 15.5v
per 12v battery in your system; depending on
temperature. The hotter it is, the lower the
charging voltage. So, for a "24v" system,
anywhere from 28.4 to 31 volts is 'normal'.
The above assumes a 'nominal' charge rate;
i.e. 5-10 amps, i.e. your battery is already
fully charged. If you're pumping 100+ amps
into the battery, you could easily see 16v
per 12v batt when it reaches full charge.
re; the 'clunking'. If the voltage is dropping
from 30 to 22, you've got a helluva load going
on ! <g> Either that, or you've got a bad
connection somewhere. "Clunking" makes
me think "relay"....but what it is, I don't know.
