Hi Caleb and All...
I am amazed by all the problems listers have with getting insurance on
their MVs.
When I got my deuce, I just visited by agent (with Farmers Insurance)
and asked him to put my deuce on my policy for liability, and there
was no problem. There was absolutely NONE of this "park it in a
garage and drive it 5 miles a year only in parades" crap, even though
mine is registered as a Historic Vehicle ($40 per year). I have
liability only, so if it gets stolen I'm SOL. I also have uninsured
motorist, so if Mister Slacker runs a red and creams my toolbox, I get
it fixed for free. Uninsured motorist was optional but was only about
$5 per 6 months so I took it as "lower sheet metal protection". But
the liability limits I have for $200 per 6 months actually exceed the
Boy Scouts of America minimums since I take the Cub Scouts on
excursions in the deuce quite often.
If you want to make a quick call, my agent's name is Jack Parden, and
his phone number is 1 (650) 593-2197. Tell him that Jim Newton
insures his "big army truck on Villa Avenue" with him and you want a
quote for your's. I pay about $200 for 6 months, which costs me a
little more than just having the California state minimums which ran
about $140 per 6 months. Jack's office is in Belmont,
California...and I can walk across the street and visit him, and grab
a Starbuck's at the same time (but I don't). Having an actual agent
costs a little more, but it is worth it in my book.
A funny anecdote when I first insured the deuce with my agent. (Many
of you have heard this story many times!) Jack's wife works there too,
and she was going through the computer questionnaire about the vehicle
to be insured. She comes to a question and asks me "Is the vehicle
four-wheel drive?" and I explained that it was 6-wheel drive and
showed her a snapshot of the deuce. She said "Then that would be a
'NO'..." and went on with the questions. I checked with her later on
the legality of our answer and asked if I had a claim would they deny
it because of that answer, and she said that as long as we answered
the questions truthfully and accurately, then it was legally binding.
The computer questionnaire should have asked "Is the vehicle '_ALL_'
wheel drive." to which we would have answered "YES". Makes me laugh!
Good luck!
