I've encountered this problem many times. My solution in
dealing with broken wood uprights is to remove the pocket,
build a fire in a 55-gallon drum (one end chiseled out)
and lay the pockets over the fire. After a while and
allowing them to cool, the stakes can be driven out. It
does not have to be a big fire as you don't want to warp
the stake pockets.
