Arthur the 12 speed tranny in my Mack RD-686 Tri-Axle dump truck has a
sping load to get the shift lever over to get it into first gear. This was
done to make it easier to find second and third gear and loaded or empty it
still requires the use of first gear to avoid excessive slipping of the clutch.

For low-low service I flip an air valve on the dashboard and the
tranny drops into deep reduction and locks the tranny shift lever in first.

Also if your M-35 Deuce dosen't have an air shift front axle "YOU
HAVE TO SHIFT INTO FIRST GEAR OR YOU COULD DAMAGE THE SPRAG TRANFER CASE!!"
The Sprag requires you to use and completely go into first gear or reverse
so the Sprag knows which way you are moving.
