Good news:
1) Adjust parking brake under truck (will need to replace the wire spring that
keeps the upper shoe from dragging later).
2) Jumpstart.
3) Close air tank drain.
4) Cut off padlock on transfer case shifter.
5) Drive truck up driveway.
6) ???
7) Profit! :-)
There's no oil pressure gauge movement, but I figure the gauge/sender/wiring
is at fault. The crankcase is full of oil. The lights don't work, and the
blinker has been removed. The truck starts, drive and stops, and the brakes
are nice and grabby, although the pedal is a bit low. The winch driveshaft has
been removed, and a broken piece of it is in the cab nehind the seats. The
truck has an arctic heating kit. I wonder whether the winch shaft was removed
because of interference with the heater box installed around the oil pan, or
because it was sheared off and not replaced?
So, do all M39-series 5-ton multifuel trucks smoke like heck at idle? Both my
wrecker and this tractor do. I'm wondering whether they need engine work, or
are polluting normally.
Pictures later...
I haven't determined the year of the truck yet, but it's a Kaiser-Jeep, so I
suspect its no newer than around 1971 or so (I think the name changed to AM
General by 1972, right?). Just under 20,000 miles, just under 1,000 hours on
the engine.
I wonder if there are any interesting cargo beds that would fit on the frame
in place of the fifth wheel? Hmm, gotta go measure...
