One thing I wouldn't do is buy an old technology radio with limited
frequencies...sure as heck the convoy would want to pick a frequency you
didn't have. Bite the bullet and buy a decent digital
radio...besides...you might just get the fever and need all the
frequencies you can get. Just get a licensed ham to go with you to make
sure that it's okay...and buy locally from a ham store or reputable
individual. You can take it back to them if it has a flaw.
I awoke recently from an afternoon nap to find that someone had piled
a bunch of plunder on my front porch...damn! There was 3 airplane seats
and a bunch of metal drawers from something...and a box of coax and
jumpers. I left it there for 3 weeks (and two frog strangling rains)
hoping they would change their minds or someone would steal it...well,
anyway, I finally bought the tractor and trailer around to do something
with it...and when I got down to the bottom of the pile...there was an
old Icom 2AT hand held 2 meter radio...turned it on, (receive worked)
and checked in the local repeater and before I could say much...someone
said...boy you sound good. Damn again, (I run all Yaesu gear here except
for the amateur television transceiver)...never owned an Icom. It's old
technology and manually operated but gets them all, 144 to 148
megahertz...probably a couple of watts output and kinda big and
cumbersome in comparison to my Yaesu dual bander. These older radios are
out there...most hams have gone to modern stuff...compact radios that
are no bigger than a pack of cigarettes. The shack has been selling one
like that (new) for around $100 with around 200 miliwatts (2/10 watt)
output. I believe I'd buy one of them before I took a shot at d-day...I
mean e-bay or a good used 35 or so watt rig in the $100 to $150 range.
By the way...you Icom guys...what's the output of the 2AT with the BP8
battery?...hi/lo Fred Martin KE8SS
