While I have my had truck in mud I never had any trouble with it down
shifting. The only complaint I had was it had the tendency to want to up
shift at the wrong time. Just as you would get going up a hill and get the
engine up to speed it would up shift and you would lose all momentum. I put
the Manual shift kit in it and it works great. When I removed the
transmission in mine I found a rebuild tag on it dated 1968. It started
slipping in low range in 1998.. 30 years is not to bad. I know the guy who
drove it from the Army base in KY and delivered it to a local Fire Dept here
in EAST TN in the 70s. He done all of the work and up keep on it while the
fire Dept had it,and said the transmission had never been touched other than
changing the oil in it. If you have ever been a Fire Dept you know how hard
they are on trucks.
G-749 trucks does have some advantages over the M35.( go ahead and flame
me ) With the sloped hood you can see out better, the cab is wider, the
steering wheel is at a better angle. No black smoke or kerosene smell, no
engine rattle and over all quieter running and no, I have never head of
putting beer in the gas tank to cool the beer. That is why I like Vodka, no
cooling needed.
