A lot of M37's have been repowered with the Hercules DT3.7 that is available
again from MARS as part of thier kit that includes everything needed for a turn
key swap. People that I know who run this engine/kit really like it.
A few folks are running with the GM6.x engine since it can be mated to a wide
variety of transmissions, revs a little higher than the other diesels, and is
as easy to instal as a Chevy smallblock...
A couple folks I know installed Detroit 3-53N's, but they are a tall, noisy,
heavy engine compared to the other ones, so you have more verticle clearance
problems getting them to fit and you really have to wear hearing protection...
I am very partial to the Cummins four cylinder version of the six that is
installed in the current Ram pickups which is known as either the 4B/BT/BTA or
B3.9-xx depending on trim. I have a 1990 Cummins 4BT (105hp/286lb-ft)
installed in my '53M37 and average 17mpg when I keep it down around 60mph...
The truck is set up to run 75mph and the swap had no detrimental effects on
offroad performance. Current ISB3.9 is 145hp/420lb-ft.
