Hi GRB...
I drove by the park today and tried to find the serial number on the
tank. There was only one number in the locations you mentioned
(behind the headlight, which was missing, but there was a number in
the casting). Here is a sharpened photo of the number:

I think the cast-in number is "5048" or "5049", I couldn't quite tell.
Is this the serial number? If not, where else should I look? I
looked under the front on the bulged-out area where the front axles
come out, but did not see any numbers at all.
There was what looked like a stamped-in number above the cast-in
number (shown in the photo) but it was painted over so many times that
I could only make out 1 or 2 digits. I suppose I could do a sly
scrape job, check the number, and repaint it with OD semi-gloss
without tipping off the local law. I'm guessing this is the serial
number, right? How many digits should it be?
