hi,
i have acquired a garwood winch with a few 'issues'.
the model/ serial number plate is pretty beat up, but
as near as i can tell it has 'M3003' on the top line.
it may be 'M3005', its hard to tell. the 2nd line has
the number 'A351575'. hopefully one of those is a
sensible model number.
the problem im having is that i cant turn the input
shaft by hand. if i take the cover off the gear box,
then everything turns freely. its as if a prior owner
machined the surface to make it flat again, and took
too much off squeezing the bushing on the drum shaft.
there were two gaskets in between the cover and the
gear box housing, which is how i came up w/ my (wild)
theory.
when i took the top cover off the gear box, i
discovered
a couple other interesting things too. first, the
rear
bearing on the worm gear's shaft appears to be seized.
can i get away w/ out replacing it for a while? or am
i scoring a nice groove into the shaft? also, is
there a
gasket between the drum and the gear box? i couldnt
quite tell if it was crud or gasket remains.
