Torque is transmitted down a shaft essentially losslessly, except for the torque
required to turn intermediate bearings. But, long drive shafts are unstable and
can whip in any number of modes. The problem gets worse with increasing length
or speed, and smaller diameter (moment of inertia) because of reduced stiffness.
There can also be problems due to buckling with torque (think twisting the ends
of a soda can in opposite directions).
