I've usually seen "paracord" in use for such needs. You can likely pick up a roll at your local surplus store for a decent price. So the manual says 'above head level'... Do you think anybody popped a few eyes out before they came up with that idea?

end of the antenna is above head level, and movement is restricted beyond the sides of the vehicle.
So other than that i guess that you can use whatever is available.
