I have read some posts that say thermostat is not needed, This may be true
on some vehicles, but not all, some new engines that are computer controled
will not see proper (according to computer) engine temp. and will enrich
fuel mixture causing excessive fuel consuption.
Also some cooling systems need thermostats to cause water to stay in
radiator long enough to cool, My mechanic had one a few days back in his
shop that would overheat without thermostat in place, put 195 degree
thermostat in place and overheating ceased.
Further, for folks who live in (great frozen north) in cooler climates - no
thermostat - possibly no heater.
I have several GM vehicles and on each of them I have put a valve in water
line going to heater - not familiar with other brands to make recommendation
on them - this valve allows me to stop hot water flow through heater in
summer, newer vehicles have water flow through heater all the time and a
flap to stop air flow into passenger compartment, this water valve makes my
AC cool more efficiently - at least I think it does
