I was told the other day when asking a similar question that the color isn't
that big a deal around here (SC) anymore. They will check the sulfur (?)
content to tell if it is for off road use. I assume people were getting by
the color deal.
On a similar note, my father though he would be smart several years back and
run off road fuel in his F-350. We have a tank for both fuels and run the
proper stuff in the big truck but he figured no one would check the "pick
up". WRONG. A lady came out to the job site and checked his fuel and hit
him with a big fine ($1000 maybe). Oddly enough she wasn't with the DOT or
EPA but if I remember right she was with the IRA. The fine was some how tax
related.
