There was a ferry across Mississippi River out from Dyersburg, Tn. when we
first moved here that when it approached the Mo. side of river, they stopped
engine, threw lever and restarted engine and it ran the other way, that was
how the backed ferry into dock, when they came back to Tenn. it was not
necessary to reverse engine on Tenn side. Ferry was constructed in 1939,
would hold about a dozen autos, nothing larger than single axle bob truck. I
never saw what make engine it was. 6 cylinder diesel, slow turning, flywheel
about 6 feet in dia.
There was room on each side of engine house for two autos to back into, 4
could pull up to bow and they would park 4 more sideways behind front row.
If you were one of the cars parked sideways they put a piece of 2 x 4 board
in front of wheel to make you feel like you were not going to roll off.
I never had occasion to ferry M35 across but they would have taken it and
maybe 4 cars, that was what they would do when I crossed in my C65 chevy bob
truck

You can, but must put in reverse. Otherwise the engine will spin backwards
like you experienced (don't try this at home).
Side note:
Old railroad "speeders" could go in reverse, but only if you stopped the
engine and restarted going the "other way".

Folks -
I had been using the air on my M35 to power an air nailer on a deck project.
I had moved the truck up my drive to get it out of the way for a while. When
it was time to move it back to the work site, I decided to bump start it as
it rolled down the hill. It was rolling backwards, and I did not give much
thought to the gear I put it in. It did start, but when I got to the bottom
of the hill and halfway out my drive, no matter what gear I put it in, it
went backwards! Meanwhile, traffic is bearing down on me.
I finally found reverse, not because I was looking for it specifically, but
I was just shoving the stick wildly at any gear that would engage. Only
after I pulled the truck back into my driveway did I realize that to get it
to go forward, I had put it in reverse.
I guess that I will not be roll-starting the truck backwards from now on!
Later -
