Gene:
Perhaps your Hummer has the "Vampire Syndrome?"
This is the fastest killer of Hummer transmissions and it is unfortunately a
common problem. In the transfer case on early military hummers there is a
cooling coil that circulates ATF under pressure from the tranny. There is a
design flaw that was corrected on later TH400's, that causes this coil to
crack. Now you are pressurizing your transfer case and causing ATF to be
forced through your vent lines into your geared hubs and eventually up into
the air cleaner. The displaced lubricant flows back into the transfer case
and into your tranny. The only symptom you get before tranny meltdown is a
mysterious loss of transmission fluid despite topping it up and no sign of
external leaks. Doesn't take long before your expensive TH400 can only be
used as a doorstop!
As far as the purchase of military surplus items is concerned unless there
is an implied or stated warranty ie:"Tested; New; Rebuilt; Guaranteed" any
financial compensation is solely dependent on the goodwill of the seller. I
have found most MV'ers bend over backwards to be fair, but Gentlemen's
agreements are predicated on the assumption that both parties are in fact
Gentlemen!
Cheers!
Ian
