Tire pressure and split rims.

I've always been a little wary of airing up the front tires on the deuce. A guy here in town was killed a few years ago airing up a split rim tire at the local gas station. That said, the TM (and the dash plate I think) talks about adjusting the tire pressure for highway, sand, mud etc., from 50 down to 15 pounds. What is the military procedure for airing up tires out in the field?
