A kind list member sent me some of David Doyle's sage advice about tinkering
with deuce injection pumps. I had read it a long time ago, but didn't recall
where to find it. Anyway, I disassembled, tapped, oiled and fiddled with
things in there a bit, as well as making sure the injector lines were routed
correctly. Everything I saw looked clean and seemed free. I re-bled the fuel
system and tried starting again. I found that each time I started it, it ran
just a bit longer before it ran out of "go" and stopped running. Eventually, I
got it to the point where it would run about 1000 RPM at full throttle, and
die if I let off the throttle. A bit more running, and it would go faster (I
didn't rev it up to see how fast, of course!), and I found that I could keep
it running as long as I gave it enough throttle to keep it at 1000 RPM. If I
let the engine drop below around 800-900, it would run down and stop.
So, now the truck has graduated to a deuce that can't idle!
I used the hand throttle to keep the engine alive, and cracked each injector
line again. Each one spurted fuel, and I could hear the engine stumble, so I
think I have the air out.
What else might make the engine fail to idle below around 900 RPM? It runs
just fine above that point. Maybe there's something sticking and/or out of
adjustment in the injection pump that makes it deliver too little fuel at
idle? I guess I need to read that injection pump manual now.
My next goal was to get the truck off the side of the road where the wrecker
dropped it off. The road is just dirt, with about enough room for one vehicle
to pass with my truck there in the weeds, so this was a priority item for me.
The parking brake isn't working, so I had to back up the truck a bit and kill
the engine, leaving it in gear, just to get the wheel chock out from the
wheel. Then I started it back up and prepared for the 50 yard drive up my
driveway. Just then, a neighbor had the bad timing to drive by, and he stopped
right next to my truck to introduce himself. Bad timing... there I am in a
truck with no parking brake and an engine that dies if I don't nurse it just
right, and I needed to be where his car was to make the turn into my driveway.
I rather brusquely told him to get his car out of my way; I wasn't in any
position to chit-chat, and I don't deal with interrupts very well. Needless to
say, I guess I have a neighbor who doesn't like me too much now. Well, he's a
member of a rather large and unexclusive club. :-)
I'd appreciate any tips from any of y'all who have had similar symptoms
before. About the idling engine, that is, not my charming personality. :-)
