If I'm not mistaken, the fluid sucking occurs when the heat exchanger in the
transfer case breaks, allowing the transmission to suck out fluid from the
transfer case (or does it pump fluid in? I don't remember). Because the
fording system plumbs most of the vents together, the resulting fluid overflow
in one case or the other results in fluid ending up in other places, such as
the air filter. I don't think that the "vampire" condition is related to how
fast you drive.
Personally, I try to drive under 60 MPH in my HMMWV, even though it will go a
bit faster than that. If you want to drive a HMMWV much faster than that, you
might be better off with a newer model with the 4L80E 4-speed overdrive tranny
and the 6.5L turbocharged engine.
