The last is a good point, "done right".
Common problem in the ubiquitous "old house" is that
there is NO GROUND!
There is nothing for the hot wire to short against and
trip the breaker or fuse. Think about that one! Not
good.
OR! And even worse, is that the screws in the panel
are too loose to allow enough current to pass to let
the fuse blow, there will be enough current to start a
fire in a shorted circuit though. Is it getting scary
yet?
With no ground you may not know you have a problem
until YOU become the path to ground.
Are all, or some, of your outlets 3-hole receptacles?
Those are grounded, right? Well, ... maybe.
