The 5 ton bridge trucks that I have seen (two) are over width, with the
larger tires that are seen on this truck. However, the body on the
trucks that I have seen more closely resemble an extra wide flatbed.
They were used (as I understand it) to carry the parts for erecting a
temporary bridge.
If this truck was used for fire service it could have been via several
methods. First, it could have been used off road only, as for the forest
fire service. More likely, it was used by a volunteer fire company that
did not have it state inspected. Another scenario to consider is, that
unless you are knowledgeable about the truck, the few extra inches of
width are difficult to discern. Vehicles that are self inspected are not
normally measured, and may not have been noticed by an inspector.
Just some thought on the subject. How about it Dave Doyle? What's the
scoop on a bridge truck? I could look it up if I had my book :-)
Maybe Joe Young has had a bridge truck or two. Any comments Joe?
