51.0 Mhz FM is a good one for four reasons:
1) An awful lot of surplus AN/PRC-6, PRT-4A and PRR-9 sets were crystaled by
the military to this frequency
2) Most surplus period vehicle stuff from the 50s forward can tune to the
frequency (less PRC-8s and 9s; RT-66 and RT-67s)
3) It's in the 6 meter amateur radio band (50-54 Mhz) which is sparsely
populated at the best of times
4) It's near to though just outside the 'junk' band populated with kiddie
walkie talkies, baby monitors, drive-thrus and old-school cordless phones so
as not to be of much interest to the especially anal among regulatory
authorities.
The only thing I've found is that it's sometimes subject to a fair bit of TV
and other interference depending on what sort of set you're using, but
that's outweighed by the fact 90 percent of collectors with a surplus PRC-6
or 10 (and battery adapter) can bring it along and join your net (though
PRC-25s and 77s will have to run without their squelches, and anyone with
VRC-12 equipment will have to run on 'Old' squelch.)
We run radios when we can in our MVPA chapter in convoy for safety etc.,
but are careful to steer clear of commercial/home electronics channels so as
not to cause undue interference. Plus it's fun.
