Harking back to my gas station days, I believe the "short" & "long" style
connectors you mention are high and low pressure rated, respectively.
Reason that high pressure fittings have the short tube inside the latching
collar is so they can be used on low pressure air systems, but not vice
versa, the long (low pressure) tube will not fit far enough into a high
pressure coupling to engage.
