You'd be a lot better off getting some 10 gauge - 3 wire cable and using
that. Per the NEC, you can use lighter gauge cable on welders that have
limited duty cycles. IE Lincoln buzz boxes. 10 Gauge is more than enough
for going up to about 50 feet. I just bought 50 feet of 10-3 SJ something
for $30.

In reality I'd be surprised if you pull much more than 30 amps using 1/8"
rod. I typically use 1/8" 6011 on DC and I run it at about 135 amps. 7014
and 7024 can pull a lot more, but I doubt that you'd be using that rod with
a Lincoln buzz box as it is pretty hard to start with those types of
welders. (low open circuit voltage).

Cheap wire is a bad idea. It only takes one good shock, even at 120 VAC to
ground, if you know what I mean!
