Guys,
The other evening while under the 5 ton, I had a thought about dealing with
the front drive issue. It seems very common for the deuce guys to have air
shifts to engage the front axle when needed. Why could we not add an
auxiliary air valve on the 5 ton transfer to allow it to operate in neutral
front drive until needed?
Do any of you know of any reason that the transfer might be damaged by
operating front drive in neutral? This would not help any on mileage,
enough to tell, unless front lockouts were installed, but sure would save a
lot of wear on the sprag unit. (You would loose the "anti-roll back" feature
of the front axle.)
If the additional air valve was installed easy to reach, say like the air
shift on a deuce, then if there was a need or perceived need for the front
drive then simply switch it on and allow the existing air shift system to
operate normally, once the need was gone, switch it off and let the transfer
return to neutral.
I welcome thoughts and comments, unless some one knows a reason why not to
try this, I am headed that way.
