Heh. They'll talk to the newer family radios well enough too - that is, if
anyone in your local chapter runs them. The only problem is that VRC-12
family radios (US Jeeps, Trucks, Tanks 1963-1990's) will have to run using
the "Old Squelch" setting - otherwise - no problem. The C42's a beautiful
radio, though you have to let it warm up for 10 minutes or so before doing
your final tuning if you want it to stay on frequency during convoys. When
I first got mine, I hooked it up in my M37, rigged the 8 ft. copper whip to
the ATU, and sat there - in Vancouver B.C. - listening to things like the
California Highway Patrol and something like the Amarillo Dept. of Public
Works around 32-26 mHz. Wonderful audio quality too - super clear. The
receiver's are way more sensitive than my RT-524, and man do those things
light up impressively in the dark!
I've been collecting bits and pieces for years, and my own M37 was in fact a
dual-installation radio truck attached to Canada's Princess Pats Canadian
Light Infantry (PPCLI) until some time in the late 70's. It came with the
ATU mount bases still on the fenders - and that's *after* being used as
somebody's ill-kept hunting buggy for the better part of 5 years. I have
enough equipment for an RRB two-set setup (repeater) once I get the truck
itself looking a bit more presentable than a heap of garage-sale castoffs,
and even scored the original installation table for the cargo bed, and the
purpose-built shelf which mounts to the top bow above the radio set just
behind the cab. Looks really cool when it's all rigged up and humming away.
