It's the tension in the stud that keeps the wheel on.
Make sure that the threads are clean, I like to wipe with a slightly oily
rag. The torque is very important. about 400ft-lb for the "inner" square
headed onces on duals and about 325 on the outer lug nuts and the front
wheels, you don't want them turning together.
A bit of oil will not hurt, as a matter of fact it makes it possible to get
the torque nice and even on all studs. It they squeek and make other noises,
then it's time to clean the threads.
After installation, they may be painted.
