Hi list ,
It is a characteristic of some injection pumps that as you ease
up on the throttle the engine will increase speed before slowing down , most
disconcerting if you are not used to it . Engines prone to this will with a
partly blocked fuel filter not slow down , I once drove for 60 miles using
the manual stop to control speed , left to its own devices it was wide open
at 70 mph .
The governor if of the hydraulic type works on fuel pressure , if the
pressure falls through a restriction , the governor thinks you want more
horses .
Before returning I changed the filter , problem solved .
A TIMELY REMINDER
For those new to diesels in areas where it gets very cold .
At about -10 c the paraffin wax in diesel fuel will start to separate out
and block fuel filters . After mid September winter grade fuel is supplied
that has a anti waxing agent in it . IF your vehicle is infrequently used
and has summer grade fuel in , before it gets too cold fill the tank with
winter fuel , treat existing fuel with anti waxing agent well mixed or add
10-30% of gasoline --- then run the engine to fill the fuel system with
treated fuel .
IF your filters block with wax through cold ,changing the filter will not
help , within minutes it will block again . To get home bypass the filters
with hose and pray .

Good luck and safe driving , Noel
