Appolgies if this already went out: I found it in my 'out' bin this evening.
I've long wondered what was ' proper ' for this type of work. Allowing
that labor rates change ( AFAIK Los Angeles prices are still a bit over
half of what Bay Area prices are ) .. should I expect to pay a shoppe to
check the prop shaft on my AEC Chevy 3/4 ton for balance? Is/Are there
common sense guidelines for when to replace a prop shaft vs
repairing/tuning it? I've had a wicked shake/shimmey in the truck since I
bought it 15 years ago. It crops up above 50 mph but not always. Many
problems were resolved by replacing the tires with new ones ( tho still
bias ply ). But it just feels like prop shaft... Much worse when you let
off the gas at high speed.
FWIW : if you have an old pick up, someone on the Chevy list posted a note
about a mid 50's 3/4 ton which was pictured in the Feburary issue of Hot
Rod on page 71. I had to run down to Longs and see it today. Sadly it's
just a photo and 2 sentence blurb, but this ' barn find ' hit 140 mph in
the Salt Flats in Utah. I say sadly because there is mention of piston or
cylinder changes but they seem to indicate not much else was changed (
snort! ). Anyone know anything about this truck? For myself, I'm lucky to
survive hitting 70 mph on those rare days when the wind is at my back and
I'm on a looooooong downhill run.
regards
Paul
