Ron, good luck on your project!
On my property in Pa, the shop building(44x76 irreg) has poured
concrete walls 8-12 inches thick for side and back wall(s) and the front
(12"')where I cast in headers for the 10x14 and 9x12 doors. I went 12 feet
high, and set steel beams for Floor of top (Bank type with apartment on top)
Concrete and forming was $84.00 per yard, and ran me +/-$14000 inc
floor, and includes 2 poured "pan" porches above . The Steel was 10x16 in ,
45 # per foot, so no bounce or sag, and plenty of stregnth for the surplus
chain hoist but a few posts in mid span.(steel ran $6000).
Next time I would use attic Trusses to save $$ and time and no steel,...
I put in Oil hot water radiant heat in floor(1/2 in pex tubing 1 ft on
center) I did insulate the 6 inch concrete with poly, and a little sand
over clean stone, 6 in thick, and welded wire reinforcement. I have heard
that wet stone will rob the heat from slab, so good drainage is a must. No
cracks yet, but give it time.
I have a exhaust fan at one end, and oil fired ceiling mtd fan heater on
other for bringing temp rapidly up from 50-55 degrees to ??, but floor
doesn't loose heat even with doors open briefly.
New so I don't know fuel useage yet.....
I have 200 amp service,
