You need a license that will cover the weight class. Some states have
non commercial Drivers licenses for Class B Trucks. On the federal
categories, that's what a M54 counts as.
You'll have to call your licensing department to see if they issue
non-commercial Class B licenses. In Georgia it's almost always
obtained by farmers or by Fire-fighters. So in urban areas they raise
an eyebrow because it's unusual for someone not a firefighter to get
one. However I was scrupulously honest and explained exactly what I
wanted to drive. The examiner thought it was interesting and didn't
see a problem. I now have a learners permit that I'll be able to
self-certify myself with on an affidavit once I have a certain amount
of time or distance under my belt.
