For you submarine captains,

There is a limit to just about everything including what the deuce will do.

The first thing before entering water more than about 2 feet in depth is to
plug the bell housing vent and pressurize it and the gear box by "pulling
the fording handle" on the dash.
If you plan on diving beyond about 3 feet, install the crankcase breather
extension.
For more than about 4 feet, install the compressor intake extension to the
engine air intake filter canister and complete the deep fording preps by
installing the air intake snorkel.

The battery (6TL) vents are good for about 4 feet of water. They are already
at 2 feet above ground so at 6 feet of water they may start to let in
water.
The pressure of the bell housing air is about 1.5 psi and with about
.45psi/foot you should be good to about 3 feet above the vent on the gear
box top.

In other words, with the deep water fording equipment installed, the truck
is good for water up to the windshield before you can expect things to go
wrong.

As far as shocking the engine with cold water, I wouldn't be to concerned,
the air may be colder than the water in the winter time, but it will cool
the engine more efficiently.

(the numbers are estimates and may be off slightly in the real world)

In addition, all breather valves (on axles and transfer case) and all seals
including the shift lever boot must be in like new condition. If, for
instance, the shift lever boot is leaking, then it will not be possible to
pressurize the bell housing/ gear box.

Have a great day!
