Actually, the early 80s diesel Maximas were not the SD33 engine. That
engine was the LD28, a first cousin (more like brother or sister!) to the
L28 (gasoline) engine in the famous 280Z cars.

280Z racers and other speed freaks use the diesel engine (LD28) crankshaft
to build a smokin' stroker racing engine out of the L28 blocks. They're
THAT similar.

Notwithstanding the above, the starters may very well be interchangeable.

But perhaps not! Both the SD33 and the LD28 were (are) considered
"industrial engines". Part of the essence of being an "industrial engine"
is the ability to accomodate a standardized SAE bellhousing and diverse
mounting options for not only a variety of starters but other accessories,
as well.

Therefore, I would not be surprised to find that an LD28 starter did or did
not fit the application you require.

Them's my sentiments.
