Why not use a selector valve that draws from the
correct tank and when activated turns off that
fuel pump? You'd have to set it up that the valve
also selects the tank for the return. I'm not
sure where the check valves really come into the
selection process.

The valve after all is a Y with one or the other
path as valid for both fuel supply and return.
