John, the standard electric trailer brake controller works off of a pendulum
principle. It usually has 4 wires for hookup.
1)ground
2) 12 volts
3) trigger wire from brake light switch
4) trailer brake supply wire.
For a short time you could center tap a 24 system if that's what you have,
other than that its a real simple hookup. When you apply the truck brakes, the
brake light switch allows current to flow through the controller. When the
truck is braking the pendulum swings forward and sends current to the brakes. The
farther the pendulum swings, the more current goes to the trailer. The
controller has 2 adjustments, centering the pendulum and a sensitivity adjustment.
Just make sure you get the model for the correct number of brake axles.
