The military never used them. From what I remember, ideas like this and the
lockout hubs were tested by the military but never adopted for reasons
likely due to cost and/or reliability/fussy-ness, so you won't find either
in a military scrapyard. Both the power steering kits and the lockout hubs
have been advertised for quite some time in both "Supply Line" and "Military
Vehicles", though since I've not had either for a year or two, I don't know
if that's still the case.
One of my friends' fathers bought a power steering system from some
commercial pattern truck he thought "close", but it was an engineering
nightmare without equal, and I don't know if he's managed to get it working
even now. He did manage to add a few more amazingly colourful swear words
to the language though, so I suppose it wasn't a total loss.
