Hi Grant...
This same exact thing happened with my deuce.
Sean helped me swap in a Fort Sill 1/99 rebuilt tranny a few weekends
ago and I am SHOCKED at how quiet this deuce is now! It has always
had that rattly coffee grinder drive train noise, and I always thought
it was normal.
My tranny finally failed when the main shaft and countershaft were
able to move apart enough to slip the gears. I'm sure this was
because of old oil attacking the bearings over time.
So my advice is that if it is making all that noise, it will probably
get you stuck somewhere very soon.
By the way, I paid $200 for this take out tranny. Apparently it was
in a deuce that burned up shortly after the rebuilt tranny was
installed. The oil is perfectly clean and clear (likely the original
from the rebuild), and all the gears are like new! The outside of the
case is all charred from the fire.
Good luck!
