FAN DECK
FEDERAL STANDARD 595B COLORS
(July 1994)

Welcome!
The Federal Standard 595B specification is a U.S. government paint color specification system that assigns numbers to colors in a loose arrangement which is used to designate a paint color. FS 595 paint sample chips are available in card and fan deck form to assist contractors in choosing paint mixes for government painting projects. These paint chips should be used as references - not tools for determining color accuracy.
This HTML page helps researchers find quick color references by providing digital approximations of the colors found in the Federal Standard fan deck. The colors provided are not in the same order as found in the fan deck, but are provided in the color order (i.e., skipping the first digit which denotes luster: 1=gloss, 2=satin, 3=matte) based on the second digit for the general color; and the last three digits for reflectance (the lighter the color, the more reflectance; the more reflectance, the higher the number). The Federal Standard numbering system is quite arbitrary, and that's why it is presented here in digital format.
Generally the second digit of a color is presented as follows:
0 - Brown
1 - Red
2 - Orange
3 - Yellow
4 - Green
5 - Blue
6 - Gray
7 - Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
8 - Fluorescent
This page was created to simplify the interpretation of the FS 595 numbering system and provide corresponding values for other coloring systems as well as a visual digital approximation of the color presented. The FS 595 color translations are provided in a table format for easier browsing. The columns provided herein include:
FS 595B number (search for your color of choice by leaving off the first digit)
XYZ equivalent (achieved through scanning and processing a digital value of the chip
Decimal RGB equivalent (perfect for digital graphic artists)
Hexadecimal RGB equivalent (perfect for web artists)
CMYK equivalent (perfect for printers)
Munsell Hue - split into two parts, Value, and Chroma (perfect for those who don't have Munsell equivalents)
An actual digital chip (perfect for the rest of us who just want to see an example)
Note that this page shows digital approximations. Many hours have been invested to bring this project to fruition; due to the amount of effort, a certain margin for human error renders this project impossible to guarantee its results or suitability. Please keep this in mind when citing references herein - for actual color comparison, a live FS 595 chip should always be used. That stated, please feel free to use this reference tool, but never forget this is just a quick reference!
