Thanks very much to the original poster for putting that link up. While I
have the 595a at work in hard copy, the net version provides much valuable
info I would not otherwise have.

I think there's a cheaper version out there nowadays, or so it seems. Both
my local automotive and industrial paint outfits have a little gun-thing
called a "Prophet" which scans and renders the colour in something the
computer can understand. "It's not that good with the darker colours" said
one of the paint technicians, but it's been mostly decent on the military
stuff I've had to do. One latest one was a U.S. Navy EOD dually which had a
beautiful shiny OD type paint job in those places Doctor MO didn't Forklift
Demolition Derby it, so I had to match it. The GM paint code on it
was..um..fictitious..so down to the paint shop to listen to the Prophet. It
came out exact. I was amazed!
Prophet needs a 2"x2" paint sample to scan and average before it'll render a
match, and that sample has to be physically flat. If you take in a blackout
light or something and try to have that scanned, you'll get a look like you
just stepped on the paint technician's foot. :)
