CUCV 6.2 ltr. oil change frequency.

I normally change oil every 3000 miles or quarterly (Q-Service) like
clockwork. I started using Shell Rotella when I bought the truck.
I have heard from several sources that if you use Shell Rotella, the oil
change interval can be safely extended to 5000 miles.
  
Is this true or an invitation to disaster?
 
I'm not sure that, even if it is true, I could change old habits and risk
my motor.

I missed most of the last oil change thread. What was the group concensus
on the best oil filter for the Chevy 6.2.
