The left hand thread on the left side was a hold over from the horse and wagon days when the wheel
was held on with one large axle nut. By having a left hand thread on the left side the nut would
tighten as the wagon moved forward.
Some time in the late 40's the automotive industry FINALLY realized that if the nut was not holding
the wheel on the axle it wouldn't matter which way the thread was cut, then the thread was changed
to right hand.
I don't have a M-37 but I do have a military flight line trailer that uses lock washers under the
lug nuts. Excuse my ignorance, but why not use lock washers??
