And my experience has been that a great number of the towing companies are
far from "Honest, Dependable, truthful, business men" I think it comes from
most of the contacts they have are with people they will never see again. I
have a good friend that is in towing business and has been for many years,
even he treats people that he will never see again different than he does
people that are local repeat customers. And I am in a small town, go to a
larger city and my experience is that they are more likely to do shoddy
work. A few years ago I was in a larger city and my Pontiac car quit, the
police called a tow truck.
He was going to hook to front and tow it to my shop - 50 miles - from the
front, without dropping drive shaft. I asked was this going to damage my
car, knowing full well the automatic transmission would suffer damage. He
said will not hurt a thing, I asked about towing from rear "too hard to do"
was reply. He did not tow it. He also said when I asked the charges he
said 2.00 per mile, I did not flinch, then he said "both" ways, still to
reaction from me he then said plus my time at 65.00 per hour and estimated
job would take 3 hours. I told him not to even touch my car - he then told
me I owed 100.00 for the call. I said some rude words and did not pay.
Cop wanted to know what I was going to do, I said I was going to push the
car about 5 feet so it will be clear of roadway and wait for tow from home.
Policeman took his car (with push bar) moved it out of road, said "have a
nice day" and drove off.

And not all of us own a towing company...
