When I was a kid ('66 to '68), my dad was a base commander at Kenai,
Alaska. Later, we moved to Fort Richardson. When ever there was some
sort of base function, a really stripped down civilian model car would
show up to pick us up. For years, I would look at cop and county cars
and think that they were luxurious compared to the base cars that would
show up. If I remember correctly, at Fort Richardson, it was Ford
Galaxies that would show up. I just remember the basic seat covers and
the dog bowl hub caps.

For what it's worth

Greg

I just went through all that research for Air Force staff cars awhile
ago,
and where local movie folks were convinced there was a certain type of
standardized vehicle decked out in a certain special colour and scheme
and
found universally on all Air Bases, the US Air Force folks confirmed
(and
backed it up with documentation) that most of their vehicles are now
"civilian models procured in a suitable shade of commercially available
blue" (and they mentioned those very Taureses above, too!) which may or
may
not have markings and 'extra' bumper mounted unit ID or task-oriented
metal
plates.

Work just got hold of a 1987 Air Force 1 ton van which seemed to be
painted
the AF Strata (or is it Stratos? I forget) Blue with the standard type
yellow markings, but this type of van seems to have been ordered as
special
purpose equipment, where I guess staff cars are procured more
generically.

I agree with the Lemay comment. Heh.
