But the distances needed to travel in Europe aren't that great also.

I was in Italy a few years ago and gas was about $4.50 per gallon, diesel
was about $4.00. However the mass transit system in just about all of the
cities was excellent. And trains regularly traveled between most major
cities. Subways were also present. Bus/trolley service was excellent.
Not so in the US. Want to get from Cincinnnati to Cleveland via train?
Not going to happen. You can take a bus if you don't value your life.

The nearest grocery store from my house is 10 miles away. It just never
seems to be that way in Europe.

I recently traveled out west from Indiana to Denver, CO and Casper, WY and
back. It was a 3200 mile trip. And that was only about half way across
the US and back.

As part of my job, I regularly drive in excess of 500 miles per week, the
last few months I have been doing almost 1000 per week. Other than driving
there is really no other practical means of transport for moderate
distances. Flying is a lot more difficult now that they have homeland
security in force.

If gas prices hit $4.00 per gallon in the US, things will be changing fast
here.

Actually I'm fairly amazed that people aren't really upset about $2.00 per
gallon now! Not too long ago I was putting 99 cent gas into the M51.

If I was an oil company president, I'd be trying to crank the prices up to
$3.00 per gallon since no one seems to mind paying $2.00 right now!
