Absolutely correct. If there is a bad ground, electricity will backfeed
through circuits and do all kinds of wierd things. A couple of years
ago I bought a brand new Ford Expedition for my EX wife (we were
married at the time) and I noticed one night that the turn signals
were doing wierd things. Well, through past experience I tracked it
to a faulty ground. It was never even hooked up at the factory! A
loose ground wire. It was just hanging there. I could see exactly
where it was supposed to be grounded to, so I just ran a screw into
it, and it worked perfectly.
